Classroom Update: Learning in Action!

Hello families!

We wanted to share some wonderful photos of some recent classroom activities and highlight the incredible ways our student is learning, communicating, and participating every day. Here is a look at some of the specialized tools and strategies we've been using:

🔤 Letter Recognition & Matching

Our student is using an adapted book to match uppercase and lowercase letters. This activity is a foundational step in early literacy for several reasons:

  • Building Visual Discrimination: Distinguishing between different letter shapes is a critical precursor to reading. Matching "A" to "a" helps the student recognize that the same letter can take different forms.

  • Active Engagement: The physical nature of an adapted book—pulling off a Velcro piece and placing it in the correct spot—turns a passive lesson into a hands-on experience. This tactile feedback is excellent for keeping students focused and motivated.

  • Boosting Confidence: Because the adapted format provides clear visual cues and structure, it allows the student to complete the task with greater independence, fostering a sense of accomplishment.

📚 Literacy & Language

This student has been working hard on concepts of print (turning pages, left-to-right progression, repetition, predictability, vocabulary development, story structure, etc.) using adapted books. These books are specially designed with tactile elements and simplified layouts, allowing every student to actively participate in the story and build their literacy skills.  It’s a wonderful way to interact with text, show understanding, and support the foundations of reading and language in a meaningful and accessible way!

🔢 Math & Communication

To explore counting, one-to-one correspondence, understanding of number concepts  and labeling, our student is using a combination of visual supports and voice-recording buttons.

  • Visuals: Help students identify "how many" and "what kind" of items they are counting.

  • Voice Buttons: Provide a clear way for students to express their findings and practice labeling independently.

🎨 Fine Motor & Art

During our fine motor painting activities, this student is practicing decision-making by using visual aids to make color choices. This not only allows for creative expression but also strengthens the hand muscles and coordination needed for daily tasks.

We are so proud of the progress being made! These tools ensure that every student can engage with the curriculum in a way that is impactful and fun.
